They still pop up in the odd spot when you least expect them. They are so cheerful and reassuring, in some way. Tradition. I hope they never totally go away.
One of my favorite “symbols” of the UK. I know the phone company was trying to get rid of them, and only kept then due to protests for and by tourists. So they kept them but don’t maintain them. Every one I went in or near last year was filthy and in disrepair. Very sad really.
